The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is a deeply moving book by John Boyne about 2 small boys during World War I, and this literature unit supports students as they learn more about this time in history. Students are asked to consider multiple perspectives of the various characters as they engage in cross-strand activities.
This literature unit provides teachers with lesson plans and activities in the following structure:
• Frontloading Activities to help students develop some background knowledge before beginning the book
o Tea Party
o Response to Pictures
o Trigger Letter
• Four Sections: Each section contains activities for 5 chapters:
o Vocabulary Activities
o Comprehension (1 page for each chapter, containing a multiple choice AND open response question per page)
• Bonus Section
o Music & Art in Nazi Germany
• Answer Keys/rubrics are provided when appropriate
