This Interactions of Indigenous Peoples and Europeans Prior to 1713 Part 3: resource helps support students as they continue learning about this time period in Canadian history. While Part 1 of this unit focused on the Indigenous groups themselves and Part 2 involved learning about the explorers and early contact between Europeans and Indigenous groups, Part 3 concentrates on the social, political, economic and religious aspects of the colony of New France. (Part 4 focuses on the relationships between the English, French and Indigenous peoples during the early fur trading years.)

This unit includes 5 engaging “three-part” lessons to assist students in exploring the challenges faced by European settlers as they began their new lives in New France. Students are asked to consider how the practices and beliefs of these settlers may have compared to those of Indigenous Peoples during this time period.
