The blended format of this resource allows teachers to teach one lesson to both grades, while still meeting the curriculum expectations in a structured manner. The societies looked at for each grade level are different, but are explored in similar manners.
Part 1 centres on the big ideas of the curriculum, with the Early Aztecs being the main focus for Grade 4, while the early Haudenosaunee are the focus for Grade 5. While the Grade 5s MUST study Canada’s Indigenous Peoples, I decided upon the Aztecs for Grade 4 because they are also in North America. This sets up both grades well for Part 2, when they will consider the role that European expansion played in affecting indigenous cultures. Part 1 also looks at other societies:

- Ancient China
- Ancient Greece
As Part 1 progresses, students took at these and other societies, considering:
- Cause and Consequence
- Primary Evidence
- How to Ask Good Questions
- Environmental Features
- Beliefs & Religions
- Daily Life
- Social Organization
- Geography & Mapping
Part 2 was written to address the specific expectations that were included in the 2018 curriculum honouring the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commision. With that focus in mind, this unit concentrates on the experiences of the First Nation, Inuit and Metis cultures in the area of what would eventually become Canada. The Grade 4 curriculum now asks students to learn about “at least one First Nation and one Inuit society” while the Grade 5 curriculum includes the experiences of the Metis society.
