This New France and British North America 1713-1800 Part 1: Concepts of Historical Thinking unit is meant to support the Grade 7 Ontario Social Studies strand of the same name. Part 1 introduces students to five “Concepts of Historical Thinking”, in order to help them think as the young historians they are becoming! The 5 concepts developed in this mini-unit are:

• Historical Significance

• Historical Evidence

• Historical Perspectives

• Cause & Consequence

• Continuity & Change

Each of these concepts is the focus of a lesson plan, with each of the 5 lesson plans including:

• Detailed 3-part lesson plan

• Learning Goal Poster

• Concept of Historical Thinking Poster

The concepts introduced in this unit will be consistently reinforced in future sections of what will eventually be a larger bundle. As this is, indeed, an introduction, some of the material covered in this unit will review material that students may have been exposed to in the Grade 5 unit First Nations and Europeans in New France & Early Canada.
