Teaching 5th and 6th Grade students about the judicial system can be engaging when every child has a role to play in a mock trial. The Trial of Dayan drama script allows students to participate in various courtroom roles as a character is brought to the criminal justice system in a trial, and the “jurors” get to decide upon his verdict.
The script has speaking roles for:
- Court Clerk
- Judge
- Prosecutor
- Defense Lawyer
- 3 Witnesses
- Dayan, the defendant
- 12 Jury Members (who will ad-lib their roles)
There are non-speaking roles for a bailiff and the courtroom spectators (the rest of the class).
Also included are links to websites with more information about the criminal justice systems of the following areas:
- United States
- Canada
- England
- Australia
- New Zealand
NOTE: This script is also included in another larger unit linked below.
