Students are able to use Google Read & Write to listen to text and assist with written tasks if needed. Most text is editable, allowing teachers to make changes to better meet the needs of their particular students for many tasks.
Students will inquire into the various reasons people move from one community to another in historical and contemporary Canada, using Q-charts to assist them in formulating questions to guide their investigations. Students will explore the following communities:
- Winnipeg
- Attawapiskat
- Early Black Communities
- Europeans in New France
Students are also given the opportunity to use their citizenship skills to make a plan for welcoming new students to their school. They will also complete an inquiry task centered upon comparing two communities for a family considering a potential move.
Answer keys and an inquiry task rubric are included with this unit.
This unit was created as a companion resource for our original unit in pdf form: Communities in Canada Part 1 – Ontario Social Studies Grade 6
