This Canadian Government: Community Mapping Inquiry Based Social Justice Lapbook Unit is a resource intended to meet many of the expectations in the revised 2018/2023 Ontario Social Studies Curriculum for Grade 5.
The resource uses the inquiry model to support students as they
  • take a close look at their local community
  • discover the community’s assets and issues
  • explore and evaluate how effectively the 3 levels of government have dealt with community issues.
Students will then form “Action Plan Groups” to more fully examine a social or environmental community issue, and create plans to deal with the issues in which they are most interested.
This unit contains 12 complete lessons, along with the templates needed for students to create their own large “lapbooks” documenting their inquiry action plan.
Some of the activities included in this unit are:
  • Mapping Our Community
  • Creating Action Plan Groups
  • Asking Good Questions
  • Oral History Interviews
  • Assessing Government Actions
  • Creating a Timeline
